Saint George's Castle

Saint George's Castle

The St. George's Castle is built on a hill at a distance of 7 kilometers from Argostoli and dominates the southern part of Kefalonia, Argostoli Bay. The castle began to be built in Frankish but expanded and gained strategic importance during the Venetian period.

For many years it was the administrative center of Kefalonia transferred to the capital Argostoli the 18th century.

Despite the devastation suffered by earthquakes, and the ravages of time, the castle of St. George remains impressive today, as a typical example of Venetian fortification techniques.
